We got first place!!

Last week on Saturday, June 27th, 2026, we competed in an event called Smokin' on Maple. It took place at the American Legion Post 1084 in Roselle, IL.

What a great day for cooking; the weather was nice, and the ribs turned out great. The event included a fundraiser to support veterans, where you could purchase tickets and go around to each contestant and sample their BBQ. It was a lot of great food and great people.

When they first started announcing the winners, we were told there was a tie between first and second place. There was a total of 9 competing teams, judged for 3 categories: Appearance, Taste, and Bite. Everyone was very excited. The presenter explained that the final tie-breaker was who had a better taste score. Instead of going from runners-up, he went straight to announcing the winner: First Place Winner, Kaleta's Kitchen.

We have to admit, we were not super confident with our ribs. They really were good, but Adam felt we've made better. Lo and behold, the judges thought otherwise.

We're hoping to participate in more competitions this year, but will instead concentrate on our pop-up markets. This Sunday, July 5th, we'll be at the St. Charles Motorcycle Museum & Art Gallery from 11 am - 4 pm to participate in their Throttle & Threads, Red, White & Ride event.
